Our client is an investment management firm and family office serving a multi-generational, high net worth family with diverse investment interests.  In addition to investment management, the office directs the accounting, tax, treasury, estate planning coordination, legal and risk management needs of the family. The family owns and operates a company with headquarters in Cincinnati, OH. 

JOB SUMMARY:  

The Director of Finance will lead the tax, treasury, operations, and financial planning strategy for the family and related family entities in a team-oriented and confidential environment. The Director of Finance will have 1-2 direct reports and will report to the President while working closely with the Chief Investment Officer (CIO). 

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Coordinate tax returns and lead tax strategy for the family and related family entities
    1. Manage the relationship with the outside CPA firm (based in Chicago) to ensure that they have all the necessary information to accurately complete all partnership, trust, gift, and individual tax returns
    2. Work pro-actively with the outside CPA firm and other advisors to identify and implement efficient tax planning strategies for high net worth individuals and their related entities, including trusts and partnerships
    3. Partner with the CFO of our operating businesses to ideate tax saving strategies for the family
    4. Analyze tax efficiency of investments and structures to minimize tax burden
    5. Significant interaction with family members on their individual tax planning needs 
  • Lead the production of family financial statements and cash flow analysis
    1. Oversee the maintenance of our General Ledger, QuickBooks
    2. Oversee the maintenance of the family balance sheet
    3. Analyze expense and tax burden on portfolios to plan cash flow, working with family members and CIO to plan for future cash needs
    4. Provide cash management reports to family members annually, including a reconciliation by account on major gifts, investments, and spending 
  • Oversee Trust Management, Estate Planning and Entity Governance
  1. Work with President and outside advisors to effectively and pro-actively manage trusts and estate planning for the family
  2. Work with President and CIO to ensure that all internal partnership governance documents are up to date and acceptable to the family 
  • Monitor Internal Controls
    1. Position routinely handles confidential information, which maintaining a high level of client service, integrity, discretion, and respect for confidential information are absolutely essential
    2. Ensure proper document retention, organization of investment / insurance / tax / trust documentation
    3. Effectively coordinate money movement and payment of expenses  
  • Lead Operations and Tax Team
    1. Effectively motivate, develop and retain talented professionals
    2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills
    3.  Identify gaps in talent and proactively address them through new hires or further training for existing staff
    4. Work to create a positive, rewarding environment for the team 

IDEAL CANDIDATES’ QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA/BS) in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance or related area as well as a CPA is required
  • 7+ years of related experience including relevant accounting/finance/tax experience
  • Years of experience should include either a quality public accounting tax experience with some or all experience dealing with family office clientele or working directly in a family office environment
  • High degree of honesty, integrity and ability to handle confidential information
  • Specialized experience in high net worth individuals and family offices
  • Entrepreneurial - driven, self-starter with detailed oriented personality and strong work ethic
  • Strength in developing internal and external relationships; managing third party service providers; comfortable developing senior relationships with accountants, lawyers, investment managers and family members
  • Comfortable in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized and adept at multi-tasking and prioritizing
