Meet Our Team: Barry Elkus
Barry Elkus, Partner
HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT GILMAN PARTNERS?
Eleven years
WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT WORKING AT GILMAN PARTNERS?
I love working with such a diverse team of talented and committed professionals. I also enjoy building trusting relationships with my clients.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO GILMAN PARTNERS?
I had recently sold my business and was in search of my next adventure. I was introduced to Tom Gilman by Keith Baldwin, the original founder of the firm. Tom had acquired the business and had exciting growth plans. I came onboard and have never looked back!
IN WHICH AREAS OF RECRUITING DO YOU SPECIALIZE?
I lead our Non-profit Leadership Practice and partner on many C-Suite searches with one or more of my colleagues.
HOW DO YOU SEE THE PRACTICE OF RECRUITING/RETAINING EMPLOYEES CHANGING IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS?
The competition for top talent will continue to intensify. Smart employers will be very intentional about retaining their best employees by creating career growth and appropriate financial incentives. To attract new talent, companies will have to offer real opportunity for impact and a compelling culture fit.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE CHALLENGES FACING INDUSTRIES/POSITIONS FOR WHICH YOU MOST OFTEN RECRUIT?
In the non-profit space, many long-time leaders are retiring and their Boards are faced with the daunting task of identifying a successor. It is a unique opportunity to take a step back and define the vision for the organization.
IF YOU COULD GIVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE TO COMPANIES LOOKING TO HIRE, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Prioritize talent, motivation and culture fit over specific skills that can be taught.
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?
Traveling, cooking, reading, racquetball… plus, I am the proud father of three daughters who are doing well, despite my career advice!
WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE PLACE(S) THAT YOU HAVE EVER TRAVELED? WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE TRAVEL PLANS?
We traveled to Australia and New Zealand while my daughter was studying abroad and those are my favorite places so far. Up next is Seattle and Vancouver. We are going later this year.
