COMPANY OVERVIEW:

Our client, Sims-Lohman (www.sims-lohman.com), is a Cincinnati-based family-owned fabricator/installer of granite and quartz countertops and distributor/installer of cabinets. The company provides products and services to custom and production home builders, designers, architects, home center stores and professional remodelers from 20 showrooms, six state-of-the-art fabrication facilities and three large distribution facilities spread across a six-state region.  Sims-Lohman enjoys a robust growth trajectory buoyed by its 49-year commitment to earning trust with customers throughout the home building and remodeling industry.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) reports to the President and will join a seasoned, cohesive senior leadership team.  The COO will help a 300-person operations group elevate their collective competence from an ‘industry leading’ to a ‘world-class’ level by leveraging his/her prior deep manufacturing and distribution experience to implement improvements consistent with the company’s culture and customer-centric focus. 

Safety excellence, satisfied customers and process/cost improvements are missions 1, 2 and 3, but this new role was also created with leadership succession in mind and the intent to eventually promote the COO to President.  Accordingly, the successful candidate must have relevant leadership experience and evident strategic and financial acumen to make her/him worthy of that future role.    

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote the safe operation of the organization across distribution centers, fabricating facilities, installation and delivery functions
  • Ensure customer expectations are met or exceeded
  • Lead operations to even higher levels of execution; augment and implement best operating practices across the geographic footprint and measure / monitor performance
  • Further embed company culture and vision within the operations organization
  • Assess, retain and (especially) develop/mentor talent to assume more responsibility; recruit additive talent as necessary
  • Provide strategic insight and analysis regarding acquisition opportunities and lead integration
  • Support teams in the formulation of short and long-range plans that align with the company’s strategic goals

 

IDEAL CANDIDATES’ QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in operations management, finance, engineering, or business strongly preferred; MBA a plus
  • Evident manufacturing prowess; 10-15 years manufacturing leadership experience with an understanding of current best practices re: lean manufacturing, quality and safety
  • 5+ years’ in a senior management role with full P&L responsibility
  • Experience serving a demanding customer base and flexing operations
  • History of grooming successors and effective leadership development
  • Evident decision-making and problem-solving skills in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated success using key metrics to drive accountability and results
  • Solid financial acumen, ability to interpret financial information to inform action
  • Excellent people skills, with an ability to collaborate with an experienced leadership team
  • High-level understanding of all business functions, including HR, Finance, IT, and Sales & Marketing
  • Knowledge of the home improvement and residential construction business a plus
  • Can travel up to 35%
