Our client, Tire Discounters, is a privately held Ohio-based company, headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio. Established in the 1970’s, the company has been in business for over 40 years under the same ownership and has grown from 1 retail location to 200+. Most of their retail locations are based in the Midwest and Southeast. Innovation and growth (organic and through acquisitions) have been the key to their success as evidenced by the number of diverse, but related businesses they have purchased.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (JOB SUMMARY)

In this role, the Controller partners with the VP Finance and Growth and the CFO. With a team of 4 direct reports and a total team of 18-20, the Corporate Controller leads and develops the accounting team and infrastructure (processes and systems) to facilitate the targeted growth they have planned.  The Controller will be involved with department organization, process redesign and automation, systems implementation, data analytics and mergers/acquisitions/integration.

The Controller has management responsibility for all the accounting operations of the Company and its subsidiaries and key fiduciary responsibilities for all confidential information and the safeguarding of all company assets.  The Controller must deliver financial results and reporting in accordance with generally accepted accounting standards (GAAP) while ensuring operational reporting meets the needs of internal stakeholders.  The Controller should have a can-do attitude and approach to achieving the company’s objectives.  The Controller must be able to present with clarity a concise set of data/facts with recommended actions as required. The Controller:

  • Ensures accounting policies and procedures are documented, enforced and up to date.
  • Monitors the financial condition and protects the assets of the Company (including all subsidiaries).
  • Plans, directs, and coordinates all accounting operational functions.
  • Ensures all accounting activity and reporting is completed in a timely, accurate and complete fashion in accordance with generally accepted accounting standards (GAAP) and identified regulatory and tax requirements.
  • Manages the accumulation and consolidation of all financial data necessary for an accurate accounting of business results at an operational level.
  • Coordinates and prepares internal and external financial statements based upon intended user requirements.
  • Coordinates activities of external auditors.
  • Provides management with information vital to the decision-making process.
  • Ensures budget process is supported and accountable activities are measurable.
  • Assesses current accounting operations, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing new processes as required.
  • Ensures internal accounting controls are robust and up to date.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of accounting software and supporting database, as needed.
  • Develops and monitors business performance metrics.
  • Oversees regulatory reporting and compliance, as assigned.
  • Ensures the accounting organization design and staffing is positioned to meet business objectives.
  • Manages all aspects of accounting staff assigned, in accordance with HR guidance.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with the fiduciary nature of the position and the direction of management.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or equivalent business experience
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible experience in retail preferred; or a large mid-market or significant division of large corporation
  • Preference for experience in high growth company, both organic and M&A
  • Preference for professional certification (CPA, CMA, etc.) designation(s).
  • Evidence of effective team development
  • Knowledge of the retail industry and associated accounting impacts on AP, AR, Warranties/Rebates/Returns, Point of Sale Systems, and Inventory while not required is strongly preferred

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS

The Controller should live within a daily commutable distance to the office in downtown Cincinnati, OH. Relocation assistance will be provided.  In this role you will be expected to be in the office the majority of the time
